Members of the Secretariat of the International Congress Commemorating Allamah Mir Hamid Husayn Lakhnavi met with Ayatollah Mirbagheri

The members of the secretariat of the International Congress Commemorating Allamah Mir Hamid Husayn Lakhnavi, by attending the office of Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, presented a report on the process of the scientific and research activities of this congress.

In this meeting, Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen Mohammad Taghi Sobhani, the president of the congress, referring to the aims and approaches of the congress, counted the revival of the scientific heritage of Allamah Mir Hamid Husayn and the reintroduction of the Shiite scientific school in the Indian subcontinent among the most important missions of this scientific event.

In the continuation, Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen Dr. Ruhollah Kazemi, the secretary of the congress, presented a report on the actions of the secretariat in the field of reviving the works of Allamah Mir Hamid Husayn, identifying and collecting manuscripts, correcting and publishing the collection of “Abaqat al-Anwar,” compiling research files, holding scientific meetings, and the programs envisioned for holding the congress.

Ayatollah Mirbagheri also, after listening to the report of the secretariat, while appreciating the activities carried out, considered the revival of the heritage of Allamah Mir Hamid Husayn to be beyond the publication of a single scholarly work, and emphasized that this movement can provide the ground for the reintroduction of one of the most important scientific and civilizational currents of Shiism in the Indian subcontinent.

Referring to the distinguished status of the Lucknow scientific school, he emphasized the necessity of introducing this current as an influential scientific school in the history of Shiite thought, and stated that the scientific capacities of this school should not remain only within the framework of reviving works; rather, it is necessary that its intellectual, methodological, and civilizational dimensions also be independently researched and explained.

Ayatollah Mirbagheri also, referring to the role of this scientific current in preserving the identity of Shiism in the subcontinent, emphasized the necessity of continuing researches about the scholarly family of the author of “Abaqat al-Anwar” and the other scholars of this school, and considered the revival of this heritage to be a ground for reconstructing a part of the historical memory of the Shiite world.

In another part of his remarks, referring to the new conditions of the Islamic world, he emphasized the necessity of deepening the studies of Imamate and Wilayah and expanding methodical researches in this field, and considered making use of the rich heritage of the scholars of the past necessary in facing the contemporary intellectual questions and challenges.

Ayatollah Mirbagheri also, warning against the expansion of secular approaches and some modern currents of historical studies in the field of religion, emphasized the necessity of the active presence of Shiite researchers in the arena of thought production and responding to doubts, and called for greater attention to the epistemic foundations and the methodology of doctrinal researches.

At the end of this meeting, the ways for developing the scientific activities of the congress, the continuation of the researches after the holding of the congress, and the grounds for scientific cooperation for reviving the heritage of the Lucknow school were discussed and examined.

Researcher’s Introduction to the Revival of Hadith al-Wilayah in ʿAbaqāt al-Anwār

Hadith al-Wilayah is the third hadith that ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Dihlawī addressed in Chapter Seven of the book Tuḥfah-yi Ithnā ʿAshariyyah. Since this hadith is one of the explicit texts proving the immediate succession and Imamate of Amīr al-Muʾminīn (peace be upon him), he found no alternative but to deny and invalidate it.

A Brief Survey of the Ḥadīth of Ghadīr in ʿAbaqāt al‑Anwār

Despite the many discussions surrounding the Ḥadīth of Ghadīr throughout history, before the writing of ʿAbaqāt al‑Anwār one cannot find a work that has addressed all aspects of this ḥadīth in detail and responded to the various objections of the Sunnīs regarding its chain (isnād) and implication (dalāla). Indeed, the efforts of ʿAllāma Mīr Ḥāmid Ḥusayn al‑Hindī were not limited to responding to the objections of ʿAbd al‑ʿAzīz al‑Dehlawī; rather, by tracing the roots of the doubts, he used Dehlawī’s statements as a basis for presenting and critiquing the statements of earlier Sunnī scholars, leaving behind a comprehensive and solid work. May Allah have mercy upon him and grant him a good abode.

Notes

Re-examining the “Manhaj of the Verses” in ʿAbaqāt al-Anwār

Among the different sections of ʿAbaqāt al-Anwār, its “First Manhaj” holds a fundamental position in explaining the question of Imamate. This section, commonly known by the title “Verses,” may at first appear to be devoted solely to examining the verses that indicate Imamate; however, a more careful study of the structure of ʿAbaqāt shows that this understanding is incomplete and, to some extent, incorrect.
